The archive of the Walpole family, Barons Walpole of Wolterton, formerly Earls of Orford, has been accepted in lieu of tax by the government, the National Archive in Kew, London, has confirmed.
Notable material includes manorial and estate maps and papers from the 13th to the 20th century and the personal and collected papers of the family from Horatio Walpole (the younger brother of former prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and godfather to his namesake Horatio Nelson), onwards.
The family seat is Mannington Hall, near Itteringham, Norfolk, with the current, 10th Baron, having sold another property, Wolterton Hall, built for the first baron in 1742, in 2016.
